As I was driving home in our winter wonderland that we call Western New York, I paid attention to all of the white lying on the roads and walkways. It reminded me of a random thought I found the other day.

“What am I supposed to do with a white crayon?”

It’s an honest question. What would you do with a white crayon? But if you are a Designer, the answer is simple. Negative Space.

Have you ever noticed that Designers enjoy a winter scene? I know we can do without the below zero temperatures and the icy wind, but have you ever stopped to ask yourself why it’s enjoyable?

A lot of people who need an advertisement, find it crucial to put as much information in a little space to get their “money’s worth”. Ads are expensive and you want to get your point across, but you want to do it in the right way.

Take a look at this original ad by Bill Bernbach.

You have two major elements. A Volkswagen and a Slogan. It’s genius! The ad moves your eye from the first element to the next without confusing you with a large amount of unnecessary information. Once the ad has grabbed your attention, you want to learn more about the product. Bill Bernbach has placed the details about the product below the slogan. That’s where your eyes have stopped. If a potential audience wants to read more information, they will. If they don’t, they would move on. You would be surprised how many people would still read the ad copy listed at the bottom, even if they aren’t interested in the product.

That’s amazing design!

In the design world, it’s a common question. Are you or your business a wallflower?

According to the dictionary, the definition of a wallflower is…

wallflower [wawl-flou-er]
-noun
any person, organization, etc., that remains on or has been forced to the sidelines of any activity

We all remember what it’s like for the wallflowers in a high school setting. The brown stacked bleachers with one pulled out at the bottom. That was the hang out spot for many, just watching and waiting to be approached. While out on the dance floor, all the popular people were having a good time. They were making connections with others. What were the wallflowers doing? Waiting.

Do you want to wait to be approached, or do you want your advertising “make” others want to approach you?

Branding yourself, allows you to build a strong image. You want to be recognized and desired by your target audience. Colors, typography, logos, business cards, flyers, advertisements, you name it! Anything you do will be viewed as a desire and removes you from the “wallflower status.”

Become an “anti-wallflower.”
